Dr. Philippe Zeppa has an essentially canine clientele in Arnage (72). After an introduction to veterinary acupuncture in 1998, he was trained in homeopathy and veterinary herbal medicine (GEB-AFVAC) and then in Traditional Chinese Human Medicine (Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Avignon).
He is now involved in the development of acupuncture within the Acupuncture and Osteopathy Study Group (AFVAC) and in the training of veterinarians in Chinese pharmacopoeia (Institute of Alternative Medicines and Veterinary Osteopathy).
The aim of this guide is to give the novice reader the envy and the means to take the first steps and the more confirmed acupuncturists to develop their practice. This book is intended primarily for veterinarians who want to know the basics of acupuncture for dogs and cats. It allows to become familiar with needle implantation techniques and to start with the use of some recipes. It also provides the theoretical basis for a better understanding of the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Veterinarians who already use acupuncture will find more complete information that they will be able to spot with a simple iconography. They will be able to focus on the diagnoses specific to Chinese Medicine in order to address new areas in their daily practice. The acupuncture points are briefly described and their locations are represented on dog photographs using bone segments as anatomical markers.
The practical aspect is thus privileged by getting as close as possible to the usual conditions experienced by all acupuncturists. Treatments of common pathologies are discussed in order to facilitate the selection of points to be punctualized. Beginners will discover the remarkable effectiveness in coxo-femoral dysplasia or primary epilepsy for example. However, some conditions require more in-depth knowledge of Chinese Medicine to achieve satisfactory efficacy. The development of feeling and its importance in acupuncture treatments have a greater place than in the majority of books devoted to this medicine. A chapter is devoted to the physical and psychological preparation of the practitioner.
